Catch set and spike

The object of this drill is to promote longer rallies for beginners and give them more spiking opportunities in a game setting. It also assists in the coaching of pass trajectory

Set up

# of players : 4-8 players
Ideal : 4 players
Equipment : 1 ball +
Average duration : 10-20 minutes

Description

  • Athletes play as they would in a normal game except the ball is caught on the first contact every time the ball crosses the net.
  • On catching the first ball the athlete must stay where they caught the ball and holding the ball with two straight arms simulate a pass which is then played out with a set and spike.

Variations

  • Switch teams
  • Switch sides

Progression

  • Depending on the level of the players you can increase or reduce the amount of time that the ball can be held before it has to be released.

Key points

  • The time when the ball is held gives coaches an opportunity to communicate with athletes about strategy and position.
  • The focus will be different for athletes at different levels but the important concept for beginners to focus on is the position that the ideal pass should go to.
