Setting movement drill

Get a high number of setting reps and footwork training in getting around the ball to face the setting target.

Set up

# of players : 3-6 players
Ideal : 3 players
Equipment : 1 ball + per team
Average duration : 10-15 minutes

Description

  • The athlete at the net (athlete 1 in the diagram) starts the drill by setting the ball about 3 m (or 10 ft) towards the service line in a high arc.
  • After making this ‘first’ contact the athlete runs under their own ball and proceeds to set it directly up and down to themselves.
  • Immediately following this ‘second’ contact the athlete turns towards the other athlete in the drill (labeled 2 in this diagram) and sets the ball to them.
  • The drill is then repeated.

Evaluation : # of reps (ex. 8) or # of time (ex. 2 min)

Variations

  • Switch athletes if needed
  • Switch sides

Progression

  • 2 contacts at the net and 2 contacts away from the net
  • Work towards only making 2 contacts.

Key points

  • It is important that athletes follow through the ball with their body on the ball set away from the net.
  • Athletes need to move very fast to the ball set away from them in order to be able to get around and face the target.
  • This will reduce the chance of a double contact or a carried ball.
