Aerial 2 touches

Get a high number of setting reps and footwork training in getting around the ball to face the setting target.

Set up

Description

  • Athletes play the ball across the net, with each athlete being given two touches to get the ball over the net.
  • The only condition is that both touches must be made in the air / off the ground. Because this is a less serious drill, athletes are not expected to always use ‘official / regulation’ volleyball technique to keep the ball in play. The ball can be lifted, tipped or contacted in any way with either 1 or 2 hands.

Evaluation : # of reps in a row (ex. 8) or # of time (ex. 2 min)

Variations

  • Switch athletes if needed
  • Switch sides

Progression

  • For a bit of random fun have athletes call out items from a category as they contact the ball (eg: brands of car or types of fruit)

Key points

  • Because this is not a serious drill there is less emphasis on technique.
