Diamond passing

Passer learns footwork and technique for passing balls served short and deep, left and right.

Set up

# of players : 3-8 players
Ideal : 3 players
Equipment : 5-12 balls
Average duration : 10-15 minutes

Description

  1. Coach or player C stands on ground or bench and serves balls in order from 1-4.
  2. Player A moves (left, right, front and back) and receives the ball.
  3. The non-receiving athlete Player B can either be in position to catch the pass or run into position from the passing spot. The ball that is caught can then be thrown back to the coach for the next serve.
  4. Repeat.

Evaluation : # of good passes (ex. 2 sets on 4)

Variations

  • Bumpsets
  • Switch servers

Progression

  1. After serving all for serves short and deep, left and right the server could focus on one particular serve that is causing the passer problems.
  2. Mix up serves to all positions to make the drill more difficult.
  3. Coach can move further back or serve tougher balls.

Key points

  • On balls passed to the side, passer should bring arms together behind the ball and get shoulder up on ball side.
  • On short serves leg closest to sideline should be forward.
  • Make sure passers are aware of change in target at each passing position.
  • On the deep ball passers need to get back quickly so they are moving forward after the pass.
