Non-passer moves

Encourages beginner passers to pass
forward and non-passers to quickly initiate
the movement towards the setting position

Set up

# of players : 3-8 players
Ideal : 3 players
Equipment : 5-12 balls
Average duration : 10-15 minutes

Description

  1. Player A and Player B stands in a receiving position. Player C is on a serve baseline position.
  2. PC serves the ball.
  3. PA and PB must read and call who will receive the ball.
  4. The non passer must runs through and touch the opposite pole (which is in the direction of the ideal setting position) before the other player passes the ball over net and on to the sand (in the middle of the opposite court.).
  5. Repeat

Evaluation : # of good execution (ex. 10) or first to 6 (Passer scores +2 if the ball falls on to the sand before the setter touches the opposite pole. Otherwise setter scores +1. Any ball falling in the middle or missing pass is -1 )

Variations

  • Bumpsets
  • Switch servers

Progression

  1. Serve the middle of the court to create additional confusion between the two passers.
  2. Serve a faster and lower serve to give the non-passer less time to read the play.

Key points

  • The athletes should make sure that they are moving forward towards the ball to ensure it goes forward which means that if the serve is deep the passer must move back early.
  • 2 Athletes should try to anticipate early if the ball is in their passing zone and make the move towards their partner.
