Double set game

Encourage sets that go 'up and down' rather than 'across'. It also assists in the coaching of correct position prior to the spike approach.

Set up

# of players : 4-8 players
Ideal : 4 players
Equipment : 1 ball +
Average duration : 15-35 minutes

Description

  • Athletes play as they would in a normal game except that the ball is set twice before it is attacked.
  • Because the non passer is required to set the ball twice the first set needs to be kept close, in an ‘up and down’ trajectory to enable them to set the second.
  • The second set should also be set in a ‘up and down’ manner as this is easier for an attacker to hit. Because the ball is being set twice it also gives the attacker additional time to move into the correct position for the spike approach.

Variations

  • Switch teams
  • Switch sides
  • Switch left and right

Progression

  • Add an additional set to make it a ‘triple set’ game.
  • Give the setter as many sets as they need until they manage to move into the perfect position from which to set the ball.

Key points

  • Good advice for beginner / intermediate athletes is that hey should focus on setting the ball ‘straight up and down’ Their forward momentum will actually result in the ball drifting forward of them resulting in a ideal set.
  • Encourage athletes to evaluate where their pass went and move to a position whereby their spike approach is almost straight on to the net. This allows them to attack any part of the court and also see where their opponents are positioned.
